Mulberry shrub cocktail brings together a delicious seasonal shrub syrup made from mulberries, blood oranges, sweet spices, sugar, honey and vinegar with honey whiskey and angostura bitters. The cocktail is garnished with a twist of blood orange zest, pink pepper and micro lemon balm.
The mulberry shrub cocktail is a little like a Manhattan cocktail which calls for whiskey, sweet vermouth, bitters, orange peel and a maraschino cherry. The Vermouth is replaced with spiced mulberry shrub and the garnish retains the orange and replaces the cherry with pink pepper and lemon balm.
There is a fine sweet sour balance with rich fruit and honey in contrast to the sourness of vinegar and tart mulberries which are tied together with sweet spices including vanilla, cinnamon, pink pepper and coriander. Creating the shrub syrup has allowed for a complexity and depth of flavour in this Spring cocktail.
